Armenian Caritas (AC) has launched a new phase of operations in the frame of fulfilling one of its 6 current strategic directions – Disaster Risk Management (DRM). A new 3-year strategy with its action plan has been developed for this purpose, with active facilitation and consultation of DRR expert Zaruhi Tonoyan “Oxfam/OxYGen” NGO. It was officially introduced to the stakeholders working in the field of Disaster Risk Reduction and Emergency Response, on March 23 2016. During the presentation representatives from Ministry of Emergency Situations, including the ones of the Crises Management State Academy from governmental and non-governmental organizations were present. The venue of the event was warmly provided by ARNAP Foundation.
In the beginning of the event AC Programs’ Manager Anahit Gevorgyan welcomed the guests and presented the 21-year history of AC, its strategic directions, geographical coverage and various activities. Afterwards, the new Strategy was presented by AC DRM responsible – Armen Martirosyan and Oxfam/OxYGen DRM expert – Zaruhi Tonoyan. The AC Strategy will focus on collaborative opportunities with the stakeholders to accomplish common goals and to have a stronger voice in advocacy efforts. The initiative was warmly welcomed by the stakeholders and there was an active discussion for further collaboration perspectives.
The DRM-related activities are specifically important for AC as Armenia is considered one of the highly disaster-prone countries in the world and there is a pressing need of a systematic and structured approach. The activities of the Strategy will be aimed at identifying, assessing disaster risks and taking preventive measures, focusing mainly on building resilient communities, mainstreaming and advocacy actions.
