…you look so much like my mom

The Sahakyan brothers ended up in the orphanage when the eldest of the four brothers was ten years old, and the youngest was only one. The difficult social situation of the family and the complicated relationship between the parents “gave” the children a sad childhood typical for children growing up in orphanages, where there were almost no dreams and goals. Instead, the four brothers united into a single fist, alert to dangers, strong in times of trouble.

While in the kindergarten, the mother visited the children sometimes, but after moving to another country under the pretext of work, their relationship was almost broken down. On the eve of 2020, the children were transferred from the orphanage to  “Sabine” small group home of “Caritas” benevolent NGO. The new environment provided the children an opportunity for new skills and new prospectives. As a result, the two elder brothers stepped into independent life confidently and bravely, ready for the challenges of new life. Currently they do their mandatory military service in the armed forces of RA, and one of them is a participant of the short September 2022 war. However, for the other two brothers, particularly for 12-year-old Narek, life continued to be a long and desperate wait, and the safe and caring environment where the child lived was not always able to compensate for the absence of his mother. Although he remembered her name well, time had erased her features from his childhood memory, leaving only a feeling of warmth and longing. And every time when receiving the desirable caress from “Sabine” employees, he would secretly whisper in their ear with childlike simplicity. “You know…you look so much like my mom…I want you to be my mom.” During the time the children were in “Sabine” social home, the staff did everything possible to stabilize the psycho-emotional connection with the father, to get the mother back and reunite the family. The woman returned to Armenia as a result of phone calls and face-to-face communication. The expected news seemed as happy as it was unbelievable. That was the reason why the еlder brothers were keeping that big surprise a secret from the little one until the last minute. For a month now Anahit Sahakyan lives with her two younger sons and waits for the elders to return. She tries to support her sons, to correct the mistakes of the past, to fill in the gaps and, most importantly, to return the boys the warm and safe family they dreamed of.
