The project goal is:
Poverty alleviation through provision of an Integrated Support to Rural Development in building Viable Communities
- Objective 1: Enhance Community sustainability through rehabilitation of community infrastructures (irrigation systems, drinking water systems, pumping station, etc.)
- Objective 2: Improve Community economic sustainability through
- enterprise development – including set-up of small-scale agro-processing units by agricultural cooperatives/community active groups
- developing seed bank in communities by provision of potato, wheat and vegetable seeds to farmers on condition to handover part of the harvest to their neighbors
- on-farm thematic trainings on new agricultural technologies, marketing, agribusiness
- Objective 3: Improve Community sanitarian hygienic situation through specific trainings
on health and hygiene in schools and also for the community.
Since 2002, Armenian Caritas implemented various projects on drinking and irrigation water pipeline installation and rehabilitation throughout Northern Armenia. As a result, ≈ 65 km pipelines were installed in Shirak, Lori and Gegharkunik regions.
The current set of projects aims at reconstruction of
- drinking water system pipeline for Hoghmik and Hovtun villages
- irrigation system for Tsoghamarg, Vahramaberd, P.Sariar, Toros and Getk villages
- irrigation water pumping station for Toros village
- cattle drinkers in Tsoghamarg and Hoghmik villages
Infrastructure rehabilitation
Pokr Sariar
- 888 l/m (148 x 6 m half rounded concrete gutters) new pipeline will be installed
- 612 l/m (102 x 6 m half rounded concrete gutters) pipeline will be renovated
45- 50 ha of arable land will be irrigated
The pipeline is the property of P.Sariar community and the maintenance of the pipeline will be carried out by the community.
Tsoghamarg village
- Construction of a dam
- Irrigation pipeline – 2820 l/m – 22 ha backyards + 60 ha arable land will be irrigated
- Cattle Drinkers 24 l/m bowls x 2 + 400 l/m pipeline for 400 cows
Irrigation pipeline, the dam and the cattle drinkers are community ownership and further maintenance will be done by the community.
Vahramaberd village
- 396 l/m (66 x 6 m new half rounded concrete pipe gutters) will be installed
- 84 l/m (14 x 6 m destructed gutters) will be renovated
40 ha land will be irrigated
The 480 l/m pipeline is accounted as a Community owned asset and the maintenance will be carried out by the community.
Getk village
- 1320 l/m (220 x 6 m new half rounded concrete pipe gutters) will be installed
46.5 ha of arable land will be irrigated, 46.8 ha backyard land will be irrigated
Total 93.3 ha will be irrigated
- 24 reinforced concrete
- water chambers will be constructed
- 3 transitional reinforced concrete bridges will be constructed
170 households /607 people will benefit from the project
The new pipeline network will be registered as a community ownership and in future will be maintained by the community.
Toros village
- 880 l/m of D=110 mm irrigation pipeline construction
- Construction of 22 kwt pumping station
- 180 hectares of land will be irrigated
Pumping station and 880 l/m irrigation pipeline will be accounted in the community’s asset balance sheet and in future the maintenance will be carried out by the community.
Hovtun village
- 1420 l/m of D=32 mm PE pipeline construction
- 900 l/m of D=50 mm PE pipeline construction
- 2 concrete enforced sump construction
- 3 manholes construction
The drinking water feeding pipelines are in the balance sheet of community owned assets and will be maintained by the community in the future.
Hoghmik village
- Drinking water
- 1260 l/m of D=50 mm PE pipeline construction
- 1700 l/m of D=75 mm PE pipeline construction
- 100 l/m of D=110 mm PE pipeline construction
- 12 l/m of D=150 mm metallic pipeline construction
- Construction of 4 catchments
- Construction of 3 manholes
- Drinkers for cattle
- Construction of D=800 mm semi round metallic drinkers for 380 cows.
The new drinking water pipeline and cattle drinkers are community ownership. The maintenance will be carried out by the community.
Improve Community Economic Sustainability
The Project will provide institutional and technical assistance to establish new agricultural processing units. Members of beneficiary cooperatives will be trained in principles and legal regulation of cooperatives, marketing and business skills development, modern methods for primary agricultural production, processing of agricultural products.
The project will establish milk collection and storing station in Horom village.
Improve Community sanitarian hygienic situation
Sustainability
The long term impact of the project is the improved living and health conditions for poor rural population of 7 villages.
Three main categories of activities are distinguished:
- infrastructure construction (drinking/irrigation water pipelines, pumping station)
- support to village-level agribusiness and farmer groups to develop new business opportunities, improve marketing, promote food safety practices, and introduce and demonstrate new technologies.
- improve community’s awareness on health and hygiene.
