The collaboration between Austria and Gyumri began in post-earthquake period, when groups of Austran volunteers arrived in Gyumri and brought with them humanitarian aid. Among the most significant contributions to the city reconstruction were the constructions of Austrian district and Austrian hospital in Gyumri.
Armenian Caritas, due to the Vorarlberg diocese of Caritas Austra, carried out many social and health programs for the elderly people, children and people with disabilities.
The biggest project is the construction of new Day Care Center for Disabled in Gyumri. It will be located in Ani district, on the 30000 square meter territory near the crossroad of 15th street and Paruyr Sevak, henceforward will be called Vorarlberg street.
In August 2012 was accomplished the leveling of the area. The construction of center will restart in April 2013. Armenian Caritas plans to construct the foundation and the basement until August of this year.
The construction of building itself will last approximately three weeks, because the construction blocks will be imported from Austria. It will take a little time for the assembling those blocks.
In the sense of necessary conditions for disability care and environmental standards this structure will be unique in all Transcaucasia. It will be equipped with alternative heating and power system.
The center will serve to 5-35 years old 100 persons with disabilities through conducting various therapies, providing developing services and organizing vocational trainings.
In the adjoining territory of the center will be founded a park and playground open for the entire community. Generally, Armenian Caritas envisages developing close cooperation between the center and the community.
